Christmas Celebrations

Makara Sankranti

Makara Sankranti, also known as Makaraa Sankrānti (Sanskrit) or Maghi, is a festival day in the Hindu Calendar in reference to deity Surya (Sun). It is observed each year in January. It marks the first day of sun’s transit into the Makara (Capricon) marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.
Makara Sankranti is one of the few ancient Indian festivals that has been observed according to solar cycles, while most festivals are set by the lunar cycle of the lunisolar Hindu Calendar. Being a festival that celebrates the solar cycle, it almost always falls on the same Gregorian date every year (January 14), except in some years when the date shifts by a day for that year. The festivities associated with Makar Sankranti are known by various names such as Maghi (preceded by Lohri) by North Indian Hindus and Sikhs, Makara Sankranti (Pedda Pandaga) in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, Sukarat in central India, Magh Bihu by Assamese, and Pongal by Tamils. The festival is a seasonal observance as well as a religious celebration.

Customs :- Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious day for the Hindus, and is celebrated in almost all parts of the country in myriad cultural forms, with great devotion, fervor & gaiety. Lakhs of people take a dip in places like Ganga Sagar & Prayag and pray to Lord Sun. It is celebrated with pomp in southern parts of the country as Pongal, and in Punjab is celebrated as Lohri & Maghi. Gujarati’s not only look reverentially up to the sun, but also offer thousands of their colorful oblations in the form of beautiful kites all over the skyline.

Significance:-
On Makara Sankranti day the Sun begins its ascendancy and journey into the Northern Hemisphere, and thus it signifies an event wherein the Gods seem to remind their children that ‘Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya’. May you go higher & higher – to more & more Light and never to darkness. Sankranti literally means “movement.” Everything that we recognize as life is movement. People who came before us have moved on, and people who will come after us are waiting for us to move on. Movement is pleasant only to a point. The planet earth is moving gently in such a beautiful manner – it is only changing seasons. From Makara Sankranti onwards, winter is being relieved step by step. So, Makara Sankranti is a festival to recognize the movement, movement being celebration, movement being life, movement being the process of life and the beginning and the end of llife.

Where the mind is without fear and the
head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken
up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth
of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its
arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has
not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead
habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake
